While Windows is still one of Microsoft’s flagship brands, it is no longer the only tech product the company is synonymous with these days. The software giant is now developing a login headset with a fingerprint sensor as they continue diversifying their business portfolio.

A patent filing published yesterday describes the basic functions of the gadget.

What is a headset with fingerprint authentication?

A headset with fingerprint authentication is a tech accessory that can authenticate user credentials by scanning their fingerprint.

The system works by pairing the headset with a device that requires user authentication to grant access.

So, it would be perfect for adding a security layer to personal computers and tablets that do not have built-in fingerprint sensors.

In the patent filing, Microsoft writes:

A headset nowadays, as an essential audio/output (I/O) accessory for the majority of electronic devices, provides a possible platform to accommodate the fingerprint authentication module or integrate the fingerprint authentication function. This enables a single user to listen to an audio source privately, and meanwhile, login his or her account or device in a secured way.

The main components of the proposed login headset is the fingerprint reader and earpieces. Also, it comes with built-in memory, storage, and a microchip.

You will be able to pair it with any device by WiFi, Bluetooth, optical tech, or hard-wiring.

Additionally, Microsoft says that the headset has a microphone. That would make it ideal for call center or other hands-free telephone use cases.

The company announced Surface Headphones 2 along with Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2 recently.

Surface Headphones 2 have a couple of impressive features, including ambient noise control. Their battery can last up to 20 hours, and their ear cups can turn 180 degrees. The accessories do not include a microphone though.
